Charges have been filed against a DWI suspect from Sugar Land who struck and killed a pedestrian on HWY 6 over the weekend.

The suspect, Trenton Gilbert Phillips (35, Sugar Land), is charged with misdemeanor DWI in Harris County Criminal Court # 1.

The identity of the female victim is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant J. Roque and Officer A. Mares reported:

The suspect, driving a gray Ford Fusion, was traveling through the intersection of Highway 6 and Piping Rock with a green light when the victim stepped out into the street and was struck. Phillips, as well as a witness in an additional vehicle, pulled over and attempted to render aid to the victim. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Further investigation determined Phillips was intoxicated and he was then arrested.

Killing a person is a misdemeanor?

A friend of mine took early retirement at 55 yrs. While riding his bike he got hit & killed by a drunk female (23 year old) driver at 2 pm in the afternoon. It was three months after he retired. You could not recognize his body as he really got hit bad.

She got a a couple of years because she had a young child to raise. And probably she got counseling.

They say that is how it works.

Im quite surprised at the fact that he stopped to help after striking her. Most spineless creeps hit and run. At least the responsible person is identified rather than police having to manhunt. What a sad ending for everyone involved.

If he wasn't intoxicated, he might have been able to avoid her.

@Bubbapie

Killing the pedestrian was probably ruled an accident because as the report stated he had a green light and the woman stepped off the curb into his path. The charge of misdemeanor DWI is "unrelated", although as Bubbapie stated he may have been able to avoid her if he had been sober.

@79pete

His arrest had nothing to do with hitting and killing a pedestrian, he had a green light and she stepped in front of him.
His arrest was for DUI, no different than if he was pulled over for speeding and found to be intoxicated.
