The Sugar Land Legacy Foundation -- a charitable organization created to support and fund local quality of life projects that benefit the residents of Sugar Land -- is accepting nominations for the annual Legacy Awards through Sept. 30.

The recognition honors individuals and businesses that have made significant, lasting impacts on economic development and overall prosperity in the city. Recipients will be honored during the city's annual business appreciation luncheon. Last year's winners were NALCO Champion, an Ecolab Company, and the late Herb Appel, former president/chief executive officer of the Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council.

The Sugar Land Legacy Foundation Board of Directors selects recipients from nominations based on commitment, business experience, tenure, service and leadership in Sugar Land.

"The commitment and vision of Sugar Land businesses, community leaders and philanthropists have built a city that is often recognized for its exceptional quality of life, diversified economy and strong city leadership," said Sugar Land Legacy Foundation President Sunil Sharma. "The Sugar Land Legacy Awards were created to commend individuals and organizations for their leadership, mentoring and outstanding economic investment in the community. We look forward to honoring the 2019 recipients."

The Sugar Land Legacy Foundation was created by City Council in 2010 to assist in the development of city-owned capital projects and to promote community investment in facilities and activities that enhance the long-term prosperity and quality of life for Sugar Land residents. The Foundation focuses on "planned giving opportunities" that do not compete with the fundraising efforts of Fort Bend County's many charitable organizations.

Past projects made possible by the Sugar Land Legacy Foundation include:
. Remembrance Tower and Honor and Remember engraved brick pavers located within the Veterans Memorial area at Sugar Land Memorial Park;
. a universally accessible playground in Sugar Land's First Colony Park;
. trail improvements and expansion at Eldridge Park;
. skate park improvements at Sugar Land City Park; and
. installation of several sculptures throughout Sugar Land.

"Our city's commitment to excellence and the Sugar Land Way is particularly evident in our business community which represents a diverse and vibrant corporate presence that continues to keep Sugar Land as an economic powerhouse," said Sugar Land City Manager Allen Bogard.

The city of Sugar Land has achieved its sustainable, strong local economy through an aggressive, focused economic development program that creates opportunities for new business investment and jobs. Sugar Land now has more than 77,000 jobs and is home to high-profile regional and international corporations housed in more than 25 million square feet of commercial space, including several Fortune 500 companies.

Sugar Land is also proud to have one of the lowest tax rates in the state while still providing a high level of service and quality of life that residents and businesses have come to expect.
