AMC First Colony in Sugar Land and other AMC theater locations plan to reopen theater by July

Great news on Friday. TGIF

AMC announces plans to reopen theaters globally by July

After temporarily closing all 630 of its locations in the U.S. beginning March 17 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, AMC Enterprise Holdings Inc. announced plans to reopen all of its theaters globally by July in a news release June 9.

According to the release, during the closure AMC was forced to furlough the majority of its global workforce, including U.S. executives and employees, as the company's revenue was put at a standstill.

"These are truly unprecedented times. I join with all our employees around the world to offer our sympathies to those affected by the coronavirus, as well as our sincerest gratitude to those on the front lines," AMC President and CEO Adam Aron said in a statement.

As AMC theaters in Europe began closing in late February, the company has already reopened 10 of its theaters in Norway, German, Spain and Portugal as of June 9. The company plans to fully reopen globally in time for the release of Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" on July 17 and Disney's "Mulan" on July 24, the release states.

Planned strategies to curb the spread of COVID-19 on reopening include implementing personal protection equipment, enhanced cleaning protocols, limited theater capacity and blocked seating. The company is also exploring the use of electrostatic sprayers, HEPA vacuums and upgraded MERV 13 air ventilation filters where possible to enhance sanitization efforts.

"Our top priorities remain the safety and well-being of our guests and associates, combined with our taking sweeping actions to preserve the long term viability of AMC Entertainment," Aron said in the statement. "We are confident we are taking the necessary steps on a broad array of fronts to ensure AMC's future success as we navigate these turbulent and uncertain times."

@Jnainani : Thats a welcoming news for all the movie lovers. Great to see they are not filing for the bankruptcy. They must have secured solid funding from their investors who believe in their future!

AMC Theatres announce reopening plans

AMC Theatres is reopening approximately 75 percent of its locations - roughly 450 multiplexes - on July 15. The announcement by the country's largest exhibitor follows on the heels of Regal Cinemas and Plano-based Cinemark stating they would also reopen next month.

AMC did not divulge which theaters would open on July 15 and which would remain closed but said that those not open on the first day will be back in business for the much anticipated releases of Disney's "Mulan" on July 24 and Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" on July 31. A spokesperson said, "Most or all theaters in most major markets will reopen July 15."

The company will have new health and safety guidelines called AMC Safe & Clean, developed under advisement of current and former faculty at Harvard University's School of Public Health and the Clorox Company.

Part of the new approach includes reduced seating with capacity down to 30 percent in auditoriums in phase one of reopening and then ramping up to 40 percent capacity in phase two. There's no set date as to when phase two will begin but phase 3, in which capacity increases to 50 percent, may begin around Labor Day with the final phase four coming around Thanksgiving, according to the company's release though these dates may be adjusted.

Other modifications include: requiring all staffers to wear masks and have their temperatures taken at the start of their shifts; contactless ticketing; HEPA vacuums; upgraded MERV 13 ventilation filters, new cleaning regimens with increased cleaning between showtimes and disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer available for use by patrons; reduced menu selections so there will be shorter wait times for food.

Masks will not be required for customers at all locations. "In areas of the country where guests are required to wear masks, AMC will abide by that ordinance and guests will be required to wear masks except while eating and drinking," the release says. "Guests at other locations are strongly encouraged to wear a mask during their visit to AMC. For guests who would like to purchase a mask upon arrival, they will be available for $1 at all locations."

As with all the other chains, AMC is faced with a lack of movies to show until "Mulan" and "Tenet" show up. So they will be showing what they call "popular repertory titles."

AMC's announcement leaves Alamo Drafthouse and Landmark Theatres as the two major chains with a presence in the Houston area that have not announced reopening plans.

Many people fear someone coughing in next seats, rows, etc.
When someone even jokes with a cough or sneeze , the place will have people running to the exits.
or hope that " AMC Theaters CEO talks partnering with Clorox on theater cleaning protocols"

I hope the teenage pranksters do not start coughing in the seating area while you are watching the movie.

Yes, that's true. I hope that doesn't happen to anyone. That would be awful. We do have to get back to some normalcy eventually by going to the movie theaters. Interesting YouTube video with the AMC CEO. Let's see what happens. 🤞

AMC CEO is saying no masks required to go inside --
People are saying no mask required they will not go
public health concerns and calls to boycott a month ahead of AMC Theaters' planned reopening.

"The word that comes to mind is, irresponsible," said Doug Stone, the president of Box Office Analyst. "Personally, I would not go to a theater right now if masks were not required."

I'm sure they're worried masks will hurt concession sales where they make most of their money. How do you eat popcorn or drink a drink with a mask on?

I'm happy AMC Theatres reversed its optional mask policy and will require employees and guests to wear masks when the movie theater chain reopens. They are listening to us. 😊
