Mail Carrier Arrested After Check Forgery Investigation in Sugar Land

The Sugar Land Police Department, working alongside Special Agents from the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, has arrested a mail carrier on charges of Mail Theft in a case involving more than 50 victims and addresses. The charge is a First Degree Felony.
After receiving multiple reports of check forgeries over the past several months, investigators launched a joint investigation. Surveillance efforts led authorities to identify a suspect, resulting in an arrest on March 9.
Jeland Mouton was found in possession of 226 pieces of mail addressed to more than 50 individuals. Sixty-six of those items contained checks that could have been used to commit forgeries. All of the mail was unopened and has been returned to the U.S. Postal Service for proper delivery.
Residents are reminded to take precautions to protect themselves from check fraud. Regularly monitor bank accounts when writing checks to quickly identify unauthorized activity. Using gel pens can help prevent the chemical removal of ink, and placing checks inside a folded piece of paper before sealing the envelope can make them less visible.
Using secure online or direct bill pay options can also help reduce the risk of check forgery.
Anyone with information related to check forgery or mail theft is encouraged to contact Fort Bend Crime Stoppers and submit a tip.
