Cold Weather Safety Tips for Pets from Pearland Animal Services

As the temperatures drop, our furry friends need extra care to stay safe and cozy. Here are some tips to keep your pets protected during chilly weather:
- Bring Them Indoors: Pets should stay inside as much as possible during cold weather. If they must be outside, limit their time and ensure they have a warm, dry shelter.
- Watch for Frostbite: Paws, ears, and tails are especially vulnerable. If you notice redness, swelling, or discomfort, bring your pet inside and consult your vet.
- Dress for the Weather: Short-haired or small pets may benefit from a sweater or coat when venturing outside.
- Check for Ice and Salt: Clean your pet’s paws after walks to remove salt, ice, and de-icing chemicals, which can irritate their skin or be harmful if licked.
- Keep Water Fresh: Outdoor water bowls can freeze, so make sure your pets always have access to fresh, unfrozen water.
- Be Aware of Antifreeze: It’s toxic to pets, so clean up any spills immediately and store it securely.
- Inspect Hiding Spots: Cats and small animals may seek warmth under car hoods. Bang on your hood or honk your horn before starting your car.

Keeping our pets safe and warm is a top priority this winter! Share these tips to help protect all the fur babies in your community.
