Sugar Land has best-tasting drinking water in U.S., American Water Works Association says

Sugar Land has the second-best-tasting water in North America, bested only by Canadian town The Blue Mountain, Ontario, according to the American Water Works Association.

During the July 2 City Council meeting, city staff in the public works department were recognized for this award that was originally bestowed to the city June 11. Sugar Land qualified by being selected as having the best-tasting water in Texas by the AWWA on April 4.

Sugar Land competed against 28 other water samples from across the country that won their state contests, according to city documents.

The sample submitted by the city was taken from a site in the center of the city's service area from the Brazos River via Oyster Creek. It was representative of the water being delivered to all citizens, according to city documents.

The water sample from The Blue Mountain was clearer with less particulate matter than Sugar Land's. Since a Canadian city won first place, Sugar Land has the best drinking water in the U.S., according to the AWWA's findings.

@Jnainani : Proud moment to be Sugar Land resident. Hard to believe we beat the northern states with best drinking water and on top of that we have the best drinking water in the country😊

That's a good question Sweetwaterboss. Maybe it's a hard habit to break if you are used to drinking spring water.

@SweetwaterBoss : I think it comes down to more of a sanitary and convenience thing then a water thing.
I do believe SL water is as good as store bought. Still, I see Ozarka trucks in our neighborhood delivering those big jugs of water and I wonder why? Perhaps it's just paranoia.

Mayor and City Council should be setting an example for the public if the water tastes good etc.
They should be using refillable water bottles to avoid using plastic bottles --- just like Earth Day ?

Perhaps they do not like the taste of the water ?

@Jnainani : Great news! But the water doesn't treat a lot of our hair and skin nice...a lot of my friends suggest adding water softener.

@Misha : Yes, I agree. We had to get a water softener installed because the water is hard here. Water softeners are better on your appliances and granite countertops too!

@Jnainani : Water softeners can make a huge difference here. I see it as a necessity here.

We only drink bottled water because we are all spoiled. Most of us did not grow up drinking bottled water. Not that it's a bad thing except for all the plastic it creates. I think eventually it will come in cans to do away with the bottles.

@Jnainani : That reminds me of a water softener. Thank you so much for the information.

My takeaway from this is: how did they even quantify taste? Is it like yelp where residents give ratings?
