Sugar Land police said the fire started when a 2023 Range Rover SUV parked outside the home caught fire and spread to the garage.

SUGAR LAND, Texas - A family lost their home of nearly 30 years Thursday after it burned down when one of their vehicles caught fire.

This happened at about 11 a.m. in the 7700 block of Northwoods Drive, which is in Sugar Land's Greatwood neighborhood.

Davin Odia's brother owns the home. He said the family had just returned from vacation when the smoke detectors went off.

"He ran toward the door, tried to come to the garage where the smoke was coming from," Odia said. "Soon as he tried to open the door the smoke pushed him back right away."
Sugar Land police said the fire started when a 2023 Range Rover SUV parked outside the home caught fire and spread to the garage. This happened as the family had just fallen asleep upstairs.
"One of the neighbors told my brother's wife that they saw a fire from underneath the Range Rover," said Odia.

With 28 years of memories now charred remains, a family is left counting their blessings while finding peace in what they have left.

"To tell you the truth, it's a painful event," Odia said. "Very painful for me but at the same time I'm blessed they are okay, they're alive. These are replaceable things. Life is not replaceable."

It's unclear what malfunctioned on the Range Rover to cause the fire. The owner initially thought it could have started with the car's battery, but KHOU 11 learned there was a recall issued back in April on the same model for a missing gasket on an oil drain pipe that could lead to a fire.

That must have been very scary. I couldn't imagine how they felt.

@Jnainani : That's awful for this family. I hope they are able to rebuild a new home. Luckily the family is safe. Lots of damage because of this recalled vehicle.
