Sugar Land Police Successfully Locate Lost Hikers Using Drone

From Sugar Land Police Department:
DRONE RESCUES LOST HIKERS. Outstanding work by our Patrol Division, Drone Unit and Dispatch after locating three lost hikers on Saturday. Just after 6:30pm, Evening Shift Officers received a 911 call from a distressed female, accompanied by two others, who had become lost while hiking in Cullinan Park. The group had ventured a significant distance from the park and was unable to navigate their way back after dark. Dispatch obtained location coordinates using the What3Words application, allowing responding Officers equipped with the app to determine the hikers' exact position. Sgt. Nowak deployed the Department’s Drone upon arriving in the area, launching it within minutes. While at the station, Lt. Glass received a DroneSense notification, enabling him to monitor the live drone feed remotely. Sgt. Nowak quickly located the lost hikers, who were in contact with Officer Reed via phone, and provided them with precise directions to exit the park. Sgt. Russell then transported all three safely back to their vehicles. Thanks to our technology and quick thinking team, the hikers were located within just 15 minutes of the drone being deployed. Our Drone Program continues to be a vital asset, demonstrating its effectiveness in real-time search in serving our citizens and community.
