Understanding Sugar Land's AMI Program

From The Cit of Sugar Land:

Let’s clear some stuff up about the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) program! Sugar Land is working on replacing or retrofitting all 40,000 water meters in Sugar Land city limits to upgrade and modernize the City’s water billing infrastructure while ensuring accurate water meter reads via our AMI program. While we haven’t hit every neighborhood in Sugar Land yet – we're only about 30% of the way finished – we've gotten some questions that we want to clear up before we go any further.

- You’ll notice two lines labeled "water volume" with different meter numbers on the first water bill you receive after replacement. Don’t worry, this is normal during a water meter changeout. One meter number reflects water consumption from your old meter, the second meter number reflects water consumption from your new meter. Once your old water meter is no longer in use, that meter number will be removed from your bill.

- It’s important to note that the new water meter installation is part of the AMI project, and you will NOT be charged for this service.

- That first bill you receive after replacement includes the total water consumption recorded by BOTH meters during this billing period, equaling your total consumption for that billing period. The amount you are charged reflects the combined consumption from the old meter and new water meter for this billing period.
